How to Protect Your Home during the Holiday Season

As the holiday season approaches, it’s important that you take the proper precautions to ensure the safety and protection of your home. The holidays are a time when families leave the house for weeks at a time. This can be risky in a number of ways, be it leaving the house full of holiday gifts with no one keeping an eye out, or simply leaving your home without taking the proper measures to protect it from the weather. This holiday season let us at Eisenhauer Insurance show you the steps you can take to protect your home.

Winterize Your Home There are a number of things you need do before you leave on vacation this holiday season. Winterizing your home is important so that you ensure it won’t be damaged by the ice and snow while you’re off enjoying your holidays. Make sure that you clean your gutters and that your roof and furnace are inspected properly. It’s also important to winterize your pipes and water heater before you leave. Be sure your water is off and that all your pipes are properly insulated and protected from the harsh Canadian weather. Create a Presence One of the big worries about leaving your home for the holidays is a lack of presence at your home. You don’t want it to be obvious that no one is home for days or even weeks at a time. If at all possible, have a family member stop by to bring in the mail or clear the snow at least once every two days. Not only will this dissuade potential burglars, but also ensure that nothing has gone wrong inside the house. Keep Quiet and Protect Your Valuables Going out of town is exciting, there’s no doubt about that. But it’s important that you don’t go around telling everyone you know about it. While it might seem like a good idea, it’s better to share your adventures with the public once you’ve returned from your trip (this includes posting on social media). It’s also important to protect your valuables while you’re away from the house. Never leave anything of worth out in the open. Store it in a hidden safe, or at the very least somewhere that is well out of sight. This includes making sure that your alarm system is working well should somebody try to break in.
