3 Ways You Can Save on Car Insurance If You’ve Started Driving Less

Are you mostly staying off the road right now? Then it makes sense to spend less on car insurance. After all, there’s now a lower chance of you having an accident.

If you’ve changed your driving habits, here are three ways you can save money on your insurance. 1. Increase your deductible The deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket when you file a claim, before the insurance kicks in. The higher your deductible, the lower the premium you pay for your auto insurance. If you’re not driving much and you’re unlikely to have an accident, you may choose to raise your deductible in order to lower your insurance bill. 2. Opt for usage-based insurance With usage-based insurance (UBI), the amount you pay for your coverage depends on your driving habits, specifically the amount of driving you do, the speed you drive at and your manner of breaking and accelerating. These are monitored either through a telematics device installed in your car or an application on your phone. UBI is a great option if you drive infrequently and safely, as it rewards you for it. 3. Stop driving one of your vehicles If you have two cars, you may want to remove coverage on one of them. However, this means that you won’t be able to drive the uninsured vehicle under any circumstances. If you think you may still take it out from time to time, consider having the minimum coverage on that car. With some insurers, you may also be able to update your vehicle classification from a “commuter car” to a “pleasure car.” Pleasure cars, or vehicles that aren’t driven daily, cost less to insure. While it’s practical to decrease your collision coverage and liability coverage if you’re driving less, you probably don’t want to touch your comprehensive coverage. Comprehensive insurance covers you for losses such as theft, vandalism and damage from storms, hail and floods. Incidents of this kind are just as likely to happen on your property as they are on the road.
